The first thing you have to do is think, think which color suitable for your house design, think how much you need, because curtains will take up large amount of visual space in your house and will have a huge impact on the overall look.
Don't skimp on size, curtains should be at least double width of the window. Make sure the curtain is long enough for window, either can puddle on the floor or skim the floor, but never be any higher unless you wan it to be too short and look truncated.
Pick lines panels if you want to control the light and temperature of the room, lines panels can filter them. More insulating lining helps keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer while a blackout lining is ideal for bedrooms because it doesn't allow any light to filter through.
Remember the hardware, curtain rods and finials should match with the fabric, and the room as well. Heavier drapes should be on a large and somewhat decorative rods while light silks and sheers can sit on light-weight and more dainty rods. Make sure you connect something with your design of curtain, like using same color chairs, lamps and so on.
A great room is all about details, so make sure you go through every tiny issue.
